The Light of the World Matt 5:14-16
Introduction
It is Difficult to Maintain the Proper Attitude Towards the World
Our Society is Not a Friend to God Nor to God’s People
Setting
Hillside Near the Sea of Galilee; After the Beatitudes
Coupled with the Salt Parable
The Parable is about the Influence Christ’s Own Are to Have on the World
The Previous Parable of the Salt, Operates Internally
Light Operates Externally
The Elements
The Nature of Light
Light (phos)-Translated Light, Fire, Illumination
Light Eliminates Darkness
Light Reveals Potential Danger & Shows Our Path
Light Cheers the Heart & Refreshes Health
Light Was the First Thing Called into Being (Gen 1:3)
All These Things Are Expected of Christian Influence on the World
Light Has Three Natures:
The Light of the Sun is Natural
The Light of a Lamp is Artificial
The Light of the Word is Spiritual (2 Cor 4:4-6 & Ps 119:105)
Light in This Verse Means Reflected Light
Christ is the light of the world (John 8:12)
His Light is Not A Reflection, But the Source
As Christians, We Reflect His Light (1 Cor 4:7)
We are to Function to Others as Shinning Lights
Ye are the light-Not Something You Become
It is the Nature of a Believer to be Light in the World (Phil 2:13-16)
There are Two Examples Given:
Light From a City
A city that is set on an hill-The Corporate Responsibility of the Church
A City Built High on a Hill Can Be Seen by Many Eyes Over a Wide Area
The Churches Have the Responsibility for Reaching the Lost Worldwide
Light From a Candle in a House
light a candle-Means to Ignite a Lamp
The Lamp is a Dark Body & Can Give No Light Until it is Lighted
We Must Be Growing in Grace & In the Word Daily
Once Lit, We Must Not Hide under a bushel or Basket or the Bed (Mk 4:21 & Lk 8:16)
Don’t Let Our Work or Leisure Occupy Too Much of Our Time & Thought to Dim Our Witness
This is the Christians Personal Responsibility
Responsibility Especially in the house-Family
Light Begins at Home
The Exhortation
your light so shine before men-In Front of or in the Face of All Men
that they may see your good works-The World Cares Little for Our Words, But Has a Sharp Eye for Our Works
The Light is Shown By Means of Good Works
Glorify (doxazo) your Father -Honor and Praise to God
If Works are Good, All the Goodness in Them Comes From the Grace of God
